Advising Uncles

Advising Uncles at Darkhorse Theater

When: June 22-30

For 10 years now, writer/producer/director Michael L. Walker has carved out a little niche in Nashville’s theatrical world. Usually operating with little budget, Walker’s Dream 7 Productions has mounted a series of original plays that celebrate African-American history and culture, reaching back to the origins of the slave trade and up through the modern era. Walker’s projects have often served as the jumping-off point for local acting talent who might otherwise find performing opportunities harder to come by. Walker’s latest is a revival of a script his company produced in its formative years. Based to some degree on the playwright’s experience growing up in South Central Los Angeles, Advising Uncles is set in 1982, where three brothers run a neighborhood bar — but manage to provide their sketchy clientele with a little bit more than a shot and a beer. Colorful characters and street life realities are Walker’s inspiration, and the cast helping him celebrate a decade’s worth of scrappy original theater includes Dream 7 vets Clark Harris, Dell Shaw, Eric Williams, Jonathan Allen and Alesha Harmon, plus newcomers Demetra G. Blackman, Alexx Ferrel and Jetara Brown.
